Wall Thickness for 3D Printing
Wall thickness is how thick the outer skin of an FDM printed part is, the plastic laid down where the printed perimeters meet the part's outside surface.

How thick should walls be when 3D printing?
Published minimum wall figures split into two different jobs, not two disagreeing opinions. About 0.8 mm is a printability wall, thin enough to still come out of the nozzle clean, and about 1.2 to 1.5 mm is a structural wall, thick enough to hold up under load.
Do not average these two numbers into one wall thickness. A wall built only to the printability figure looks fine and can fail under load. A wall built to the structural figure everywhere adds material and print time to features that were never going to be stressed.
What is the recommended minimum wall thickness for 3D printing?
Stratasys Direct's FDM Design Guidelines state the recommended wall thickness is generally 4 times the slice thickness, with a case by case absolute floor of about 0.008 in, roughly 0.2 mm.
The same 2017 edition also draws a line between a single printed contour, which can run as thin as 2 times the slice thickness, and this general 4 times recommendation for a wall meant to be solid rather than a single line.

What is a good wall thickness for 3D printing PLA?
Fictiv's article on wall thickness gives 0.6 mm as an absolute floor and about 1.5 mm as a good wall for PLA parts specifically.
Protolabs Network and Xometry publish material agnostic figures instead, 0.8 mm and 1.2 to 1.5 mm, so Fictiv's PLA specific number sits inside that same printability to structural range rather than adding a third disagreeing figure.
How does nozzle width decide wall thickness on a 0.4 mm nozzle?
Prusa's Knowledge Base gives wall thickness as perimeter count times nozzle width on a 0.4 mm nozzle: one perimeter is 0.45 mm, two is 0.9 mm, three is 1.35 mm, and four is 1.8 mm. Prusa also states a wall thinner than one nozzle perimeter is not printable.

How does the minimum wall figure compare across printers and services?
Manufacturers and manufacturing bureaus publish minimum wall figures that differ by roughly 2x, because some describe a printability limit and others describe a structural one. No single row in the table below is a house rule for every part.

What wall thickness do we design and check to?
Our standard nozzle is 0.4 mm, with a 0.2 mm nozzle available on a reviewed, in house job. Our own automated checks flag a part when its thinnest dimension estimates under 1.2 mm, and again when its average wall estimates under 1.6 mm.
These are our own operating limits, not a third party figure, and they are the same numbers our upload checks use on your file today.
What this page does not tell you
- This page compares published figures from different printers and manufacturing services. It does not give one number for your specific part, since geometry, orientation and load all change what a safe wall is.
- Every third party figure below comes from that source's own machines and materials. None of it was measured on the printers that will make your part.
- None of these figures says how wall thickness interacts with infill or perimeter count on your own slicer settings. That interaction is not published anywhere we can point to here.
When to print a test coupon instead
Print a small coupon at the wall thickness you are considering before committing to a full run, especially when the wall has to hold a load, hold a seal, or take repeated handling. Send the file through a review request and tell us which wall thickness to test. A person reviews your request and follows up by email.
