FDM vs Injection Molding
FDM and injection molding are two different ways to make a plastic part, one by depositing melted filament layer by layer with no tooling, and one by injecting molten plastic into a machined mold that has to be built first.
Is there a single quantity where 3D printing stops being cheaper than injection molding?
No: published break-even estimates for FDM against injection molding run from about 130 units to about 14,000 units, a hundredfold range, and the real number depends on mold cost, part size and labor for your specific part. This page states that range with its sources rather than picking one figure out of it.
| Source | Break-even estimate (units) | Context | Provenance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fictiv | about 130 | one case study, a specific part | Fictiv, The Economics of Injection Molding vs 3D Printing |
| Xometry | 250 to 2,000 | general guidance, not tied to one part | Xometry, Injection Molding vs 3D Printing |
| Protolabs Network | minimum of about 500 | rule of thumb | Protolabs Network, Injection Molding Guide |
What does injection mold tooling cost?
Mold tooling cost varies hugely by size, material and complexity: named sources put simple aluminum tooling as low as about $1,495 and steel production tooling as high as $100,000 or more, with a side action or added complexity pushing the number higher still. Averaging these figures would hide that spread rather than explain it.
| Bureau | Tooling type | Cost | Provenance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Protolabs | Mold, starting price | from $1,495 | Protolabs, Injection Molding Services |
| Protolabs | Side action, added cost | $1,500 or more | Protolabs, Injection Molding Services |
| Formlabs | SLA-printed mold | from about $100 | Formlabs, How Much Does Injection Molding Cost? |
| Formlabs | Aluminum mold | $2,000 to $5,000 | Formlabs, How Much Does Injection Molding Cost? |
| Formlabs | Steel mold | $5,000 to $100,000 | Formlabs, How Much Does Injection Molding Cost? |
| Protolabs Network | Aluminum pilot mold | $3,000 to $5,000 | Protolabs Network, Injection Molding Guide |
| Protolabs Network | Simple mold | $250 to $1,000 | Protolabs Network, Injection Molding Guide |
| Protolabs Network | Steel mold | over $5,000 | Protolabs Network, Injection Molding Guide |
| Xometry | Small mold | up to about $10,000 | Xometry, Injection Molding Cost |
| Xometry | Complex mold | up to about $100,000 | Xometry, Injection Molding Cost |
How many parts does a mold actually last before it wears out?
Protolabs states an aluminum prototyping mold carries a minimum of 2,000 shots, while Protolabs Network states aluminum tooling generally lasts 5,000 to 10,000 cycles and steel tooling lasts 100,000 plus. A mold rated for fewer shots than your full run is a cost the tooling quote needs to include up front.
How does per-part cost change as order volume rises?
Formlabs publishes its own per-part cost curve for a molded part: about $4.00 per part at 100 units, $2.60 at 5,000 units, and $1.70 at 100,000 units, as the tooling cost spreads across more parts. That curve is one bureau's own model for one part, not a quote for yours.
| Quantity (units) | Cost per part | Provenance |
|---|---|---|
| 100 | $4.00 | Formlabs, How Much Does Injection Molding Cost? |
| 5,000 | $2.60 | Formlabs, How Much Does Injection Molding Cost? |
| 100,000 | $1.70 | Formlabs, How Much Does Injection Molding Cost? |
How long does one injection molding cycle take?
Protolabs Network states a cycle time of 15 to 60 seconds per shot, and Xometry states that cooling alone makes up about 80 percent of that cycle. Cycle time affects labor cost per part far more than it affects the mold itself.
So how should I decide between FDM and injection molding for my part?
No minimum order. One part or a production run, same flat per-part pricing tiers.
We price across one part to 10,000 parts on the same flat per-part tiers, so a real number for your own part and quantity is one quote away instead of a guess based on someone else's break-even estimate.
What this page does not tell you
- This page does not give one break-even quantity. Every published estimate above comes from a different part, mold and cost model, and none of them transfers cleanly to a different part.
- The tooling and per-part cost figures come from named bureaus quoting their own processes and their own example parts, not a quote for your specific design.
- None of the sources here agree on a single crossover, and averaging them would invent a number none of them actually published.
